Ballroom, or
ball culture, as we know it today, started in Harlem circa 1970, though its roots date back to the mid-19th century. Historically, it was a place for queer Black and brown youths to convene after hours in community centers and other spaces to “walk” — to compete by donning the appropriate dress and attitude — in various categories that reflect and comment on popular culture and the “mainstream” (read: white, straight, cisgender) society from which they were often excluded.

Then President Ronald Reagan didn’t publicly mention AIDS until 1985,
by which time 12,000 people had died.
The disease disproportionately affected queer people of color and so the ball community stepped up for itself.

It's important to note AIDS was originally called GRIDS, Gay Related Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Not wanting reality to hurt anyone's feelings, the name was changed.

AIDS was invented or brought on by niggers but nothing else. AIDS is transmitted through sharing blood which is why it was mostly predominant in the gay community as they ripped each other’s intestines during butt sex and exchanged some fluids that should never be exchanged. I would go out on a limb and guess there is a much larger population percentage of niggers that have engaged in gay sex as they will muh dikk anything. I see HIV medication commercials every now and then and they do always have some fruity niggers on them, which I find amusing. At least they’re being somewhat honest.
