Guilty plea in brutal murder case brings justice to slain homeless woman in Bibb County

In a turn of events, Kenny Obryan Whitehead, aged 58, entered a guilty plea to all charges on the morning that his murder trial was scheduled to begin.

The charges are related to the murder of 49-year-old Teresa Ponder. Whitehead faced charges of Malice Murder, Rape, and Necrophilia.

The incident occurred at the Daybreak Ministry on Walnut Street in Macon. Teresa Ponder, an unhoused individual who frequently sought refuge on the ministry's steps due to security cameras monitoring the area, was the victim. On the evening of May 17, 2020, Ponder settled down for the night in her usual spot at the Daybreak Ministry.

According to video surveillance, Whitehead followed her to the location and initiated an assault on her. Ponder resisted the sexual attack, leading to a struggle during which she was asphyxiated. Subsequently, Whitehead sexually assaulted her both before and after her death. Bibb County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the scene and apprehended Whitehead while he was actively sexually assaulting Ponder's lifeless body, resulting in his immediate arrest.
