Mayor, other DC leaders react to shooting death of 13-year-old Karon Blake

Multiple District leaders have shared their feelings about the shooting death of a 13-year-old boy in D.C.’s Brookland neighborhood this weekend.

DC Police officers found Karon Blake on Quincy Street Northeast, near Michigan Avenue Northeast, around 4 a.m. Saturday.

Officers determined a man living in the neighborhood had shot Blake after he allegedly appeared to be tampering with cars in the area.

The man, who has yet to be identified or charged, interacted with Blake before he ultimately shot him with his registered firearm.

Emergency crews eventually took Blake to an area hospital where doctors would later pronounce him dead.

Newly elected Ward 5 Councilmember Zachary Parker issued a press release about Blake’s death after meeting with Blake’s family and the Metropolitan Police Department.

“No car or material possession is worth a life – under any circumstances,” he said.

Pressure mounts on D.C. police to name resident who killed 13-year-old

As classmates and others mourned the 13-year-old killed in Northeast Washington over the weekend, pressure built for D.C. authorities to publicly identify and charge the man who told police he fatally shot the youth after seeing him breaking into vehicles.

Council member Trayon White Sr. (D-Ward 8) said he didn’t know “how a person shoots a kid in the community and admits to doing it and is not detained.”

They have said a man who lived on the street confronted Karon after he heard noises, then claimed to have seen the youth and possibly others breaking into vehicles. Police have said it appears two other youths ran away.

Nee Nee Taylor, founder of the DC Safety Squad, an activist group supporting Karon’s family, likened Saturday’s shooting to “vigilante behavior” and threatened “collective action” if authorities don’t share more information.
