I have to admit I have no idea, I just know the physics. But you are probably right, as soon as the thing stalled they were doomed at that low altitude & speed. But I don't know how fast a 172 reacts, and how much time you have after it starts to whistle. Chimpout probably knows more!
On the other hand: If it is that critical, the instructor probably would hold the rudder as well, especially when there's a nigger on board. As she didn't, attempted rape sounds very plausible to me!
