Petition Calls to Cancel 'Disgraceful' Opera Based on Murder of Emmett Till

Apetition has gained traction online as a student at John Jay College in New York City is calling for the planned premiere of Emmett Till, A New American Opera to be cancelled.

Mya Bishop first launched her petition earlier this week, which has already received over 10,000 signatures, asking the public to "urge" the college to "cancel the play."

The opera's source material is a 2013 play Emmett, Down in My Heart, written by white playwright Clare Coss. According to Playbill, those critical of the new work take issue with Coss' involvement in the piece as well as its alleged focus on a fictional white woman. The new work is a collaboration between Coss, 86, and Black composer Mary D. Watkins, 83.

The only reason they'd put a white woman in this show (other than the antagonist) would be for comic relief or to simply show 'Dat eevul why man' . Opera, in the snooty and classical sense, is a European thing. Mostly, it's in Italian, German, Russian, or French. Someone correct me here if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's a Spanish, Dutch, or Portuguese-language opera universally known. There's Chinese opera, but that is called something else, I think it's Noh drama. I don't even think there's any kind of Scandinavian language opera (Wagner having composed in German). My point is, not even all of whiteys works can be called opera. Hence, nothing of nigger work can be called an opera. A jungle fever dance maybe, mambo and bixnood maybe, but not opera.

Opera is about uplifting and ennobling the human spirit. Nigger existence can never be ennobled, period.
