The name of the shoe is also the name of the Greek female deity of victory (fast victory in some translations - - speed) in ancient mythology. Also the name of an anti aircraft missile system back in the 50's. Even speaking the names of pagan gods is against the commandments. Christians tend to pick and choose more and more everyday which ones they feel need to be followed. I wish the traffic court judge would afford me as much leeway. So far, it hasn't worked out.

I guess it was more of a statement about the way the church has allowed pagan influence in - ostensibly to compete with those pagan religions over hundreds of years but especially lately. If you think about it, it's kind of like the one drop rule. One rotten apple spoils the whole barrel. I was raised a Southern Baptist and always wondered why we celebrated halloween in the basement banquet hall where we had our Wednesday night pot luck dinners - with cardboard witches taped to the door to the church. Just never really made sense to me, you know? The older members were livid over it.

I remember a kid I went to church with getting mad at his parents because he had just found out that santa wasn't real. He made a huge scene that night in the same banquet hall during the the christmas gift exchange screaming at them asking when they were going to tell him that Jesus was made up as well.

Now, the Methodist church is allowing gay clergy. It just seems like everything is falling apart and it didn't just happen overnight. That same all white church I went to as a child now has inter-species couples in attendance.



It just seems like anything goes nowadays and standards are gone.

I'm not a stupid man, but can anyone explain to me how a drill bit, hermetically sealed in a plastic bag with a desiccant pack included in the bag can expire, no longer worthy of drilling a hole, in most cases through plastic or aluminum?

I saw shit like that in spades during my enlistment. Some of it was legitimate. Most was not. More money was spent on disposal of Hazmat/Hazwaste than was spent on product actually being used. I never saw drill bits with an exp. date but I've seen shit just as stupid if not worse. I've seen cases of GP cleaner tossed. ITS JUST DETERGENT for cleaning the sinks and urinals in the head FFS!!! Oh, and HEAVEN FORBID you get caught with a locker with a few extras you needed so you don't have to down the squadron that's about to deploy for 9volt batteries to put in their damn Fluke meters. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Either way, some QA prick would put it in his evals when he dinged you on an audit for it and now you've got to explain yourself to the Div O or worse.

As far as an explanation, the only reasons I could ever come up with were regulations (FAA and DOD alike) built around keeping the unions employed.

Yeah, it reminds me of a story I read years back about life in USSR, before the (mostly) fall of the communism and coming soon to a nation surrounding YOU!

Factories would produce truck loads of nuts and bolts, load them up into dump trucks and ship them out to landfills - just to keep people employed.

We're gettting off-topic, but I'll just say that 1 Cor. 8 tells us that it's about the spirit in which something's done, not the name. Now, I didn't know the origin of the Nike name. I thought it was Japanese and related to Nikkei. Not knowing the origin shows my point: is a Christian wearing Nikes to don footwear, or to purposely honor a Greek god and thus want to make other Christians stumble?

Halloween may have started as a pagan holiday (there's some dispute there) but has become so secular that I have no problem with giving treats and my neighborhood's traditional party at the park. Around here, neighbors have good enough taste to know what their children shouldn't wear. When I was growing up, once in a while a girl would be sent home for dressing as, I'm not kidding, a prostitute. My old church would have a party for children where they could have treats and bob for apples, but with restrictions on costumes. Ghosts, witches and vampires were specifically mentioned as inappropriate.
