Meet Sports Illustrated’s First Black, Asian Transgender Swimsuit Model

After successfully pushing for diversity on runways and in fashion spreads, Leyna Bloom is back to smash yet another barrier.

The Chicago native is featured in the pages of Sports Illustrated’s 2021 Swimsuit Issue, becoming the first Black, Asian transgender model to appear in the magazine. She follows Valentina Sampaio, who last year became Sports Illustrated’s first transgender swimsuit model.

In a short essay announcing Bloom’s appearance in the magazine, editor MJ Day praised the Black and Filipino model for having “an undeniable sense of self that shines through the minute she walks on set.”

I honestly have never met anyone who subscribed to this magazine. The only time I've ever seen one not on a news stand was in a doctor's office on the coffee table and it wasn't the swimsuit issue. Now it's online, no one is subscribing and they are teetering on closing from what I've read.

SI has been irrelevant for a long, long time. When I was a kid in the 70's and a young adult in the 80's I was an on/off subscriber. They started to really lose me when there became more ads than articles, and they tended to lean more towards the nigger sports than anything that I was interested in...Without going into a long diatribe, I will only say that SI has been dead for a long time and the only ones who didn't know it was SI. Shut this irrelevant and pathetic rag down already...
