Dennis Aaron Wyman, 42, was accused of first making the racial slurs at a small group of friends, all of whom were African American, at around 11:30 p.m. at the Staybridge Suites parking lot on Praire Avenue on June 29, Torrance police spokesman Sgt. Alexander Martinez said. One member in the group, a 23-year-old Wilmington man, called his father — an armed security guard who worked nearby — for help as tensions rose and Wyman got into his Chevy El Camino, according to officials.
“The dad was there to see what was happening, the suspect was still yelling and was in his vehicle,” Martinez said. “He began to drive at the dad, the dad tried to get out of the way and at the same time he was able to fire multiple rounds of his handgun at the vehicle, but he was struck by the car.”
The suspect’s vehicle was believed to have been struck by the gunfire, but no individuals were struck, Martinez said. Officers arrived to the shots-fired call but Wyman had fled by the time officers arrived, he said.
