Because they have to be SEEN doing it. That's the entire basis of virtue-signaling. They're 'signaling' that they are more enlightened, charitable, educated, and compassionate (and thereby better) than you...phoning it in doesn't allow for that. Take note of the fact that this bunch never seems to engage in local issues that don't get them some kind of accolade or free press. It's all about their ego's, start to finish.
