Yeah, it's an extremely ugly side of the gay community, although it almost certainly explains why AIDS has spread so rapidly in the USA.

Homosexuality was not stigmatized because people thought it was gross; it was stigmatized because it was recognized as a practice that literally caused incurable diseases to be spread throughout the known world.

Promiscuous sexual activity, whether heterosexual or not, is similarly stigmatized because of the potential health risks.
