The truth is that the wife is afraid to go out alone because if she does, one day she'll have acid thrown in her face, or get honor killed.
Many Muslim-American hijab-wearing women are resigning themselves to living a marginal and secluded life. To avoid unpleasant encounters they would rather not venture out. My wife, who wears the hijab, does not want to go out unless I accompany her.
