Maybe there is something wrong with me but I say thank you to anyone who holds the door open for me and I'll hold the door open for anyone. It's just the way I was raised. Of course I expect nothing in return so I certainly don't brandish when I get nothing in return.

Yep, that's how decent people got raised by their parents. What happened to me twice though: I got accused of sexism. Because holding the door open for a female supposedly is misogynist. Once in Berlin, and once in London. Both times the "ladies" were absolutely hideous.

I grew up alongside, and worked for and with Jewish NY'ers, and picked up on their lingo over the years.
There are many variations on the Yiddish word "Schvartze" which apply to the funky negro. They include :
schwatza, schwoogie, schvuggy, and schvugger. We used to torment our school psychologist, and his secretary,
with non-stop, incredible silly nonsense - but they also were in charge of this program that hooked up homeowners
with our anything-for-a-buck cheap labor. On a furniture moving gig, we heard our customers talking about some work
to be done, and the solution was to get a couple of schwatzas. We figured that was us, and my friend wrote an essay for
his English class called "I a schwatza", which had the entire faculty in stitches. We used to cut class, and go do "schwatza
work", to get money for weed and beer, but I had a 3pm-9pm job at a supermarket to go to afterwards. My favorite schwatza
-for-hire sidekick died from covid, right at the beginning of the outbreak. He had just retired after 37 years of being an electronic
tech for the US Post office. I was breaking him in as my schwatza, on electrical construction jobs, where I dropped at least 100
N-bombs a day, on the ride to and from. I never laughed so hard in my life, having my good friend in range of my awful racism.

This has never happened to me once though I have heard of it happening to many others. Should it ever happen, I have a canned response at the ready:

I'm sorry, I was raised to always hold the door open for other ladies and gentlemen. Had I realized that you were neither, I would have let the door slam in your face.

That would have been the perfect answer! I didn't reply anything, because both times I was perplexed. Especially with the girl in London: I didn't even stop or look at her because I was in a hurry when I did hold the door open, I just noticed her and slowed down for a second (she was walking behind me) to not let the door slam into her face. And then she immediately started yelling at me ("do you think I am too weak to open the door by myself, sexist prick" etc.). I just walked away.
