BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. (WCTI/WKRC) - An inmate in Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor died Tuesday after officials said he was assaulted by a group of other inmates.
Semajs Short, 24, was attacked in a housing area of the prison around 2:14 p.m., according to officials. First responders attempted to save his life but were unable to as Short was pronounced dead at 2:37 p.m.
Three other inmates were injured during the assault and were taken to a medical facility with non-life-threatening injuries.
Short was serving a 31-year sentence for second-degree murder, convicted in the shooting death of a 2-year-old in 2017.
