Carnegie man charged in 4-year-old son's overdose death

A Carnegie man was charged this week with involuntary manslaughter in connection to the overdose death of his 4-year-old son in May.
Van Marcus Redding, 36, also is facing one count of endangering the welfare of children and drug charges after his son, Avant Redding, was determined to have died from fentanyl toxicity after the substance was found in Redding’s home.
According to a criminal complaint, Redding told officers that he picked the boy up around 1 p.m. on May 7 for a family birthday party, where they remained until about 6 p.m. After going to the Tanger Outlets in Washington County, the pair stopped at McDonald’s around 8 p.m.
Once at Redding’s apartment, the boy ate his Happy Meal at the coffee table in the living room, then began throwing up and seemed unsteady on his feet, Redding told police. He took the boy to St. Clair Hospital but was involved in a hit-and-run collision on the way there.
