He then walked inside the store and began striking multiple self-checkout machines, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage in the process.

“They fled like they were running for their lives. Unfortunately, a shopper fell and injured herself. You finished your rampage by hitting a lorry. This was a terrifying incident. It makes people feel unsafe to go out in public. Your behaviour was extreme, excessive and unpredictable.”

The court also heard that he had 27 previous convictions for 59 offences, but that the majority of these had taken place when he was a juvenile.

In mitigation, the court was also told Smith had “psychological issues” and had “gone off the rails” after his partner’s child had died, causing their relationship to break down. He also pleaded guilty “at the first realistic opportunity”.
