'Malicious, hurtful and racist' content found in Pickering school yearbooks handed out Saturday

St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering is recalling all the 2019-20 yearbooks handed out this weekend, after officials were “horrified” to learn about racist content that was included with a Black student’s graduation photo.
A social media post from the student’s family says the original message included with his photo — "RIP Grandma. Thank you for guiding me through my four years of high school” — was replaced with the words "Rip Harambe Dooga booga."
The student’s aunt, Mayma Raphael, notes on Facebook, “for those who don't know, Harambe is a gorilla at a zoo in Cincinnati, Ohio,” and says that her nephew had been bullied by students at St. Mary in the past and called a monkey.

“Even though he has never caused any school issues or had any disciplinary actions against him, a star athlete at the school, excelling in football, basketball, and track and field — all this didn't shield him from racism's emotional and psychological impact,”
