Artificial intelligence has an issue with racial bias. That isn't news. It turns out that we train our machines to adopt the same prejudices that shape our own lives. The machines are no more inherently biased than our own children until we get our hands on them. And then we create mirrors of ourselves. We expose our kids to a certain worldview, we skew their mindsets and experiences, we shape their views. And we do the same for our machines.
Now researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have proposed “the concept of predictive inequity in detecting pedestrians of different skin tones in object detection systems”. In other words, you're more at risk of being hit by a self-driving car if you're not white.
