I know that there is a thread on this subject in the forums where I cannot post as a guest, but there is more to this story that you guys should know. It's not more about what these stupid assholes, think, but it's more about the story behind the writing of the poem by Francis Scott Key that was put to music and became our National Anthem.

Key was a Baltimore lawyer, and he was sent to negotiate prisoner exchange with the British. American POWs were being kept on prison barges in the bay outside of Fort McHenry. The British admiral agreed to the exchange, but he told Key that it was academic anyway, because that night the entire British fleet would be arriving to bombard the fort off the face of the earth. Key protested because their were women and children in the fort, and the Admiral told him not to worry. The British had sent word to the Americans that if they would simply lower the flag that was flying over the fort, the British would know that the Americans were surrendering and the bombardment would instantly stop.

Once the fleet arrived and the bombardment began, it was terrifying. But the flag never came down. Sometimes the pole holding it would get hit, but men ran out to hold it up, at the cost of their lives. Key, on board one of the British prison ships, would report to the American prisoners as the shelling persisted on the fact that the flag was still there, and the starving and weary prisoners would cheer the fact that their comrades were not surrendering. This flabbergasted the British, who could not comprehend how the idea of liberty could be so ingrained in the Americans that they would lay down their lives just to keep its symbol flying.

Subsequent verses (those we do not normally sing) describe these events, and the terror felt by those inside the fort who were enduring the shelling but not surrendering. One of those verses includes the phrase: " “No refuge could save the hireling and slave…” These words indicate that everyone in the fort -- soldiers, and civilians (including hired workers and slaves alike) were enduring the shelling. Now these assholes from the news story cited above think the words mean that Americans reveled in killing slaves. Stupid motherfucking niggers. They wanted to be included in history, and when they are included with respect (probably undeserved) they claim its racist and want to shit on America.

Here is a link to a youtube video that tells the story of which those monkeys who misinterpret the National Anthem are unaware.
