A young man, known as Ali, has been arrested after allegedly planning to carry out a terrorist attack with an automatic rifle at Melbourne's Federation Square on New Year's Eve.
Victoria Police deputy commissioner Shane Patton said the man, an Australian-born Muslim with Somali parents, tried to buy an automatic firearm through "face to face interactions" but was ultimately unsuccessful.
"He's very innocent," the man's father said.
The couple had moved to the home because they did not feel safe in the government housing they had been provided after arriving from Somalia more than a decade ago.
The couple had toiled to ensure their children could go to the private Al-Taqwa College, an Islamic school in Truganina
A neighbour said the "beautiful family" had lived in the house for at least a decade.
